i've finally found a neighborhood coffee shop to call all my own. it's called it's a grind, and it just opened up near my old apartment (naturally). it's themed after the rock greats, so there are fabulous, gigantic pictures of bob dylan, eric clapton, the boss, and bb king on the wall.
my favorite things to order are the spiced chai latte (to die for) and the nutty cow (hazelnut heaven).
my favorite place to sit is near the fireplace in the comfy leather chair.
my favorite thing to do while i'm there is read while i people watch out of the corner of my eye.
at various points throughout my life, i have made grandiose plans of opening a coffee shop/bookstore. i know it's not the most original idea, but when i first had it, it was fairly novel. i even have a folder filled with design plans (i'm sure those are in desperate need of revision now). but i thought how wonderful it would be to go to a coffee shop and pull a book off the shelf to read while i sat there. there'd be fantastic music. and photographs of people i had known and places i had been. and pillows and funky lamps (but not too funky--i want everyone who comes in to feel comfortable). and there'd be a coloring table for kids.
it would certainly have to be an italian coffee shop. that's the only way i could interest myself in baking. who am i kidding. i'd have somebody else bake. but there would be biscotti and cannoli and crepes with nutella and homemade gelato. un po' di dolci per mangiare.
and guys like this dude would come in and exclaim that i was really on to something. and i would take his picture and put it on the wall next to marvin hamlisch.
gosh, i would love that.

St. Maries is in desperate need of the following: a used/new bookstore, a coffee shop, and a video store. We've got a paper supplies store which doubles as a mini bookstore (and also sucks), a coffee shop which does the trick, but can you have too many?, and the local grocery stores rent videos. All but the coffee shop are sorely lacking, though, and I've often thought of combining all three into a store (the only way to make niche marketing work in St. Maries). If you want, I'll sell you my idea and you can just open up a store in scary North Idaho.
so long as you have tea, i'm there. but hey, we're going to be neighbors and feed each other and have playdates arranged for our children anyway. so i think i'm set either way. awesome.
